Germany has ordered 18 new Leopard tanks from Kraus-Maffei Wegmann to replace those previously sent to Ukraine, AP reports citing the company's statement, Interfax writes.
This is a Leopard 2A8 battle tank model. The start of deliveries is scheduled for 2025. The company will also produce 12 new self-propelled howitzers for the German Armed Forces.
Kraus-Maffei Wegmann does not provide financial details of the agreement. However, AP reports that earlier this week, the German parliamentary budget committee approved funding for this purpose in the amount of 525 million euros.
At the end of January, Berlin announced its readiness to send 14 tanks to Ukraine, then their number was increased to 18 units. Also, Denmark and the Netherlands promised to provide their outdated models of Leopard tanks to Ukraine.
In May, the Swiss government approved a proposal to sell back to the FRG 25 German-made Leopard 2 tanks in exchange for Berlin's promise not to transfer these combat vehicles to Kyiv later.
