The United States has sharply accelerated the modernization of Abrams tanks

The U.S. Army is abruptly accelerating the renewal of the Abrams tank. Instead of a long-term bureaucratic procedure related to the modernization of M1 Abrams, the White House and the Pentagon chose a course for the rapid renewal of the tank. General Randy George has instructed to radically reduce the timing of the launch of the new modification, writes Autocareone.com.

At first, the army announced the period - 65 months. George called it unacceptable and ordered the program to be expeduced. The new plan is to deliver the updated M1E3 tank in 24-30 months. Among the key changes: autoloader, active protection, updated transmission, improved ergonomics and combat systems.

The army also plans to transfer more freedom of industry to develop solutions:

“The cool thing here is that the industry has allowed the details to be chosen by actually allowing its supply chain to be built,” said Alex Miller, technical director of the U.S. Army.

The goal of the program is to create a modular platform that is easy to adapt. The contract with General Dynamics Land Systems is expected in May.

These changes coincide with the Trump administration’s initiatives, which this month signed an executive order to revise major defense programs. Miller stressed:

“This is the way to change processes and innovations. When we win here, we can look at other programs,” he said.
