Karrar is an Iranian development of a new main battle tank (MBT) based on the T-72M. Iran's defense industry said the new Karrar has a special coating that can withstand heat waves and can hide from heat-seeking missiles.
In early 2016, Iran announced the production of a new MBT of its own design, Karrar, very similar to the Russian MBT of Russian production. T-90MS, but mostly based on Iranian T-72s.
According to an analysis by the Army Recognition editors, the Karrar is based on the chassis of the Soviet T-72, but with a new turret. The design of the tank is very similar to the Russian-made T-90MS main battle tank. According to retired Major General Vladimir Bogatyrev, the Carrar is a copy of the Russian T-90MS, the most advanced modification of the tank. However, the Iranian tank uses some of the features of the American M1 Abrams. Russian military experts have suggested that in terms of certain military capabilities, the Karrar is unlikely to be comparable to the Russian T-90.
In March 2017, Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Hossein Dehgan opened a production line for a new homemade Karrar main battle tank at the Bani-Hashem Armor production complex in Dorud district, Lorestan.
