NATO countries are preparing to create a new battle tank

NATO member countries Germany, Italy, Sweden and Spain are planning to develop a new main battle tank. The newspaper Handelsblatt writes about this.

“Germany, Italy, Sweden and Spain want to develop a new main battle tank,” the newspaper said. They added that Germany is starting to develop a successor to the Leopard 2 tank with the support of Krauss-Maffei Wegmann and Rheinmetall, the alliance also includes partners from Italy, Spain and Sweden. A few days ago, the parties involved signed the relevant contracts and now intend to apply for funding from the European Defense Fund.

The amount of funding is expected to be significant. The creation of this alliance came as something of a surprise, given that Germany already has similar cooperation with France. In 2017, the governments of the two countries agreed on a project for a main battle tank that would replace the Leopard 2 and the French Leclerc tank by the middle of the next decade, the material concluded.
