Japan to Modernize Type 10 Main Battle Tanks

Under a program implemented jointly with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, the tanks will be equipped with an active protection system (APS) and a 30mm remotely controlled weapon system (RWS). This step is aimed at enabling the armored units of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) to more effectively adapt to future combat conditions.

The Japanese Ministry of Defense announced the start of a process encompassing both the modernization of existing Type 10 tanks and new production under a contract signed with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.

By the end of the year, the company plans to deliver 12 new Type 10 tanks. With these deliveries, the total number of tanks is expected to reach 148.

The modernization process is aimed at increasing the armored units' resilience, particularly against UAVs and anti-tank guided missiles. Japanese officials state that trials are currently underway with international active protection systems such as Rafael Trophy, Elbit Iron Fist, and Rheinmetall StrikeShield. Furthermore, tests are currently underway to test the feasibility of installing the Kongsberg RS6 Protector 30mm remote-controlled weapon station on tanks.

The Type 10 is a fourth-generation main battle tank weighing approximately 44 tons and powered by a 1,200 hp diesel engine. The tank improves unit coordination with an advanced C4I system and provides a high rate of fire and accuracy thanks to its 120mm main gun with an autoloader. Its modular armor design allows for tailoring of armor levels to the battlefield threat.
